Here are the detailed category criteria for the 2012 West Coast Beard & Mustache Championships:
(Approved Styling aids include mustache wax and hairspray ONLY)
1. Natural Mustache
Mustache may be styled but without aids. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 3/4 inch beyond the end of the upper lip.
No styling aids are allowed.
2. Chops
Chops – Hair is grown equally on both sides of the face, starting from the temple, as far down the face as one wishes, but must have a shaved chin. Hair does not gro continuously from one side to the other. With or without mustache.
Styling aids are allowed.
3. Styled Mustache < 6in
Mustache will be less than 6 inches at it’s widest points (wingspan).
The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 3/4 inch beyond the crease of the mouth.
4. Styled Mustache> 6in
Mustache will be greater than 6 inches at it’s widest points (wingspan).
The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 3/4 inch beyond the crease of the mouth.
5. Full Natural Beard < 1ft
Hair is grown continuously from one temple to the other, as it grows naturally. Must have a mustache, which is encouraged to be untrimmed. Beard must be at least one foot in length from the bottom of the chin.
No styling aids allowed.
6. Full Natural Beard > 1ft
Hair is grown continuously from one temple to the other, as it grows naturally. Must have a mustache, which is encouraged to be untrimmed. Beard must be less than one foot in length from the bottom of the chin.
No styling aids allowed.
7. Partial Beard
Any beard that does not meet the criteria of any other category.
Styling aids are allowed.
8. Full Beard with Styled Mustache
As grown, only mustache can be styled with aids and may start growing from up to maximum of 3/4 inch beyond the crease of the mouth.
Styling aids approved for the mustache only, none in the beard.
9. Freestyle Mustache
All moustaches that do not match other classes. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 3/4 inch beyond the end of the upper lip.
All styling aids are allowed.
10. Freestyle Beard
In addition to approved styling aids, any other foreign material may be placed in the beard. Anything goes.
11. Sassy Stashette
This is a women’s only category. Mustaches of any size and any material are accepted.
12. Bearded Beauty
This is a women’s only category. Beards of any size and any material are accepted.
